Segmented Starter Gears

PMC in cooperation with the railroad industry developed the three-piece segmented alloy starter gear. It was
designed to extend life and minimize change-out time by 90%. Removal and reinstallation can be reduced
to eight man-hours, saving manpower and resources while reducing equipment downtime.

The triple alloy “Super Gear” is carburized, hardened and Cubic Boron Nitride finish ground. When compared to some induction heat treating methods, carburizing provides a better and more consistent hardness through
the effective depth resulting in exceptional wear properties. CBN finish grinding adds beneficial compressive stress in the tooth surface compared to conventional aluminum oxide grinding. The “Super Gear” technology has become the standard in the industry. The combination of alloy metallurgy and CBN grinding gives the “Super Gear” the following advantages:

  • Up to 50% longer wear life
  • Extended time between reprofiling
  • Reduced traction motor vibration due to involute wear
  • High tooth surface hardness after reprofiling
  • Time and expense savings for overall reduced operating costs
  • Exclusive 5-Year Limited Wear Warranty (unique to the industry)
